Se passaram três meses e vinte dias desde a memorável noite que trouxe Hernan Cattaneo e alguns dos melhores produtores da label Sudbeat ao Warung Beach Club. Do dia 7 de setembro até 27 de dezembro pode parecer um período curto para um artista retornar, porém, entre essas duas datas o mundo gira diversas vezes, nossas vidas podem se transformar drasticamente e certamente foi o suficiente para a saudade de ver ‘’El maestro’’ jogando em sua pista favorita voltar a preencher os corações da sua enorme base de fãs no Brasil.
Como em 2018, a curadoria concedeu all night long para Hernan apresentar todo seu arsenal musical, podendo com tranquilidade exibir o que tinha de mais novo e algumas de suas faixas favoritas do ano. Foram nove horas e trinta minutos de set. Impressionante, certo? Nada disso, apenas alguns dias antes, Catta tocou nada menos que 24 horas no lendário club Stereo de Montreal ao lado de Guy J. Mesmo com uma intensa gripe, ele não abateu-se, sua paixão pela música transcende todos os limites físicos e mentais, onde apenas uma energia espiritual muito forte é capaz de explicar como alguém que mesmo após 40 anos de carreira, ainda parece não demonstrar sinais de desgaste. É consenso que ele está melhor do que nunca, e seu set no templo, em minha opinião, foi o melhor dos últimos anos. Vamos descobrir o porque neste review.
Entrei no club um pouco após as 22h, já havia uma ótima quantidade de fãs estabelecida em frente a cabine. Duas coisas chamaram minha atenção de imediato. Primeiro, o ritmo já estava um pouco quente, diferente de outros anos quando jogou mais deep e calmo nas duas primeiras horas. Segundo, o novo sistema de som do club está realmente impressionante. Batidas firmes que estremessem todo o corpo e linhas medias cristalinas para não perturbar os ouvidos. Não a toa, estamos falando do que tem de mais moderno no mundo para shows. O Warung nunca deixou de investir e melhorar sua estrutura e 2020 sera um ano de grandes mudanças no club, principalmente, no Garden, que já se encontra com alguns ambientes interditados.
Após rever os amigos e se estabelecer, minha primeira emoção da noite veio as 22h40, quando ouço o vocal inconfundível de “Need to feel loved” de Reflekt em um remix novo que ainda não identifiquei. Um dos grandes clássicos da dance music e que coincidentemente ouvi muito em 2019. Jamais esperava ouvir no Warung!
Às 23h10 o destaque vai para o remix do paulista Luciano Scheffer para “Ellipsis” de Jero Nougues. Essa é o tipo de faixa que Hernan sempre tem na case, progressão no mais alto nível. Próximo da meia noite a pista já estava completamente cheia, Hernan parecia flutuar na cabine e o ritmo não dava descanso. O vocal mágico de RUFUS DU SOL em ‘’Underwater’’ com remix de Yotto fez todos vibrarem de emoção, sem dúvidas uma das grandes musicas dos últimos tempos. Logo em seguida, ele joga outro vocal que me fez vibrar em particular, pois era minha música favorita no ano; ‘’U & Me’’ de Sentre. Mais uma vez eu estava surpreendido por ouvir algo não esperado através de suas mãos.
Perto de 1h da manhã, outra faixa que foi um dos grandes destaques de 2019, ‘’Falling In’’ de Orsen, com sua melodia marcante. Olho no relógio, ainda era cedo e já tinhamos nos emocionado diversas vezes. O melhor era saber que ainda havia toda uma noite pela frente. ‘’Betera’’ de Edu Imbernon & Raxon se destaca nessa hora que tem músicas com um tom um pouco mais moderno, flertando com techno. Às 2h da manhã, uma das grandes músicas da noite em minha opnião, ‘’Runner’’ de FOALS com remix de RUFUS DU SOL fez todos cantarem e exploriderem juntos. Em seguida, os destaques vão para ‘’Black Swan’’ de Luca Bacchetti e às 3h em ponto “Bloom’’ de HVOB com remix de Antrim e Claudio Cornejo colocou a pista em uma imersão universal.
A música escolhida para marcar o meio da noite foi a faixa que Hernan mais tocou ao longo dos anos no Warung – ‘’I feel loved’’ de Depeche Mode com o novo remix de Fur Coat levou todas as misturas de gerações de clubbers ao delírio, cantando e reverenciando de forma unânime. Que momento!
A partir daí, alternou entre momentos mais lineares, como quando jogou ‘’Lost’’ de Hunter Game, junto de outros mais progressivos como na fantastica faixa ‘’Where are you’’ do artista 1979.
Uma vantagem em não termos mais horário de verão é que às 5h já está amanhecendo. Para o Warung isso é incrível, visto que, infelizmente, agora precisa fechar ainda mais cedo. Para celebrar esse momento do surgimento dos primeiros raios solares na pista, ele separou um clássico do rock progressivo de 1977. ‘’Magic Fly’’ de Space com remix de Amanita e Makebo.
Eu sabia que já havia ouvido essa melodia tão marcante antes, porém, não lembrava seu nome ou artista. Para quem é viciado em música, não lembrar uma ID que você já conhece é extremamente agoniante. Sem dúvidas essa faixa foi um dos grandes momentos em todos esses anos ouvindo a lenda Argentina.
Eric Lune em ‘’Embers’’ às 5h40 caiu como uma luva por ter uma melodia realmente difícil de descrever, que se somava a um toque levemente tribal. ‘’Mahana’’ de Soma Soul manteve o tom espiritual. Essas duas faixas deram um novo significado para a fase final do set. Ritmo alto, bpm baixo para os padrões de hoje e recortes emotivos.
“C`est Bon’’ de Fulltone às 6h06 foi uma jogada leve, pura e anestesiante antes da clássica paradinha para os aplausos do público. Hernan volta com energia máxima para mais 20 minutos de brisa viajante. Olê, olê, olê, Hernan, Hernan. O meu último Warung do ano não poderia terminar de outra forma.
Seu set pode ser descrito como tendo um pegada mais moderna, com muitos vocais e, principalmente, extremamente dançante em toda sua extensão! Ele simplesmente não queria dar descanso ou entrar em momentos mais obscuros e massacrantes como nas clássicas horas 4 e 5 da madrugada. Eu sempre falei que essa fase do set é a minha favorita, porém, definitivamente, não senti sua falta. De certa forma, foi uma maneira diferente de surpreender seus fãs mais antigos. Um dos segredos dos grandes artistas é se reinventar até nos pequenos detalhes, onde só quem realmente os conhecem consegue identificar. Nessa pista, eram muitos!
Onde está o segredo de inovar sem perder sua melhor característica? Quando você acredita em uma ideia e concentra todas as suas energias em sua realização, independente dos caminhos que percorrer, irá chegar no mesmo ponto. Porém, não pode esquecer nem um minuto de que ela deve ser construida aos poucos. Em sua ideia central, Hernan faz isso em cada mixagem, em cada loop, em cada imposição de efeitos, em cada decisão das próximas duas, três faixas à frente. Mas do que estamos falando? Diria que sua ideia central como DJ basicamente gira em torno de “ser consistente”. Criando sempre o que adoro chamar de ‘’fluxo continuo’’, onde os breaks parecem menores do que são, e as partes que mantém a pista conectada e dançando estão acima de tudo. Explosões apenas fazem parte do jogo. Quando se trata das grandes lendas da construção de set, mãos para cima definitivamente não são a camisa 10 do jogo.
Depois de dez anos ouvindo Hernan tocar diversas vezes, eu arrisco afirmar que a consistência rítmica é sua maior e melhor característica. Afinal, ela não pode ser copiada por ninguém, nem pode ser anexada a nenhum estilo, se trata de talento puro. Já tive anos que mencionava o lado “darkness’’ de Hernan como o seu melhor. Em outros, seu lado tribal era o que dava a liga. Em outros, as linhas de baixo sempre dançantes ou talvez o lado emotivo. Sim, tudo isso se trata de ‘’Cattanism’’, como ele mesmo chama o conjunto de características que o definem. Entretanto, acredito que a consistência vence todos! É ali, onde ninguém espera, que ele ganha os corações de gerações e gerações ao longo de uma vida dedicada a música! Que não te canses nunca, Maestro, o Warung te chama.

Hernan Cattaneo at Warung: consistency will always win
Three months and twenty days have passed since the memorable night that brought Hernan Cattaneo and some of the best producers from the Sudbeat label to the Warung Beach Club. From September 7 to December 27 it may seem like a short period for an artist to return, however, between these two dates the world spins several times, our lives can change dramatically and it was certainly enough to miss seeing “ El maestro “ playing on his favorite club again and filling the hearts of his huge fan base in Brazil.
As in 2018, the curatorship granted Hernan all night long to present his entire weapon musical, being able to calmly show what was new and some of his favorite tracks of the year. It was nine hours and thirty minutes of set. Impressive, isn’t? None of that, just a few days before, ‘’Catta’’ played no less than 24 hours in the legendary club Stereo Montreal with Guy J. Even with an intense flu, he did not abate, his passion for music transcends all physical and mental limits, where only a very strong spiritual energy is able to explain how someone who, even after 40 years of career, still does not seem to show signs of wear. There is a consensus that he is better than ever, and his temple set, in my opinion, was the best in recent years. Let`s find out why in this review.
I entered the club a little after 10 pm, there was already a great number of fans established in front of the stage. Two things caught my eye right away. First, the floor was hotter, unlike other years when he played more deep and calm in the first two hours. Second, the club`s new sound system is really impressive. Firm beats that shake the whole body and crystalline mid lines so as not to disturb the ears. No wonder, we are talking about the most modern sound system in the world. Warung has never stopped investing and improving its structure and 2020 will be a year of major changes in the club, especially in the Garden floor, which already has some restricted areas.
After seeing friends again and settling in, my first emotion of the night came at 10:40 pm, when I heard Reflekt`s unmistakable `Need to feel loved` vocals on a new remix that I haven`t yet identified. One of the great classics of dance music and I coincidentally heard a lot in 2019. I never expected to hear it at Warung!
At 11:10 pm the highlight goes to the remix by Luciano Scheffer from São Paulo for ‘’ Ellipsis ’’ by Jero Nougues. This is the type of track that Hernan always has in the case, progression at the highest level. Towards midnight the floor was (already) completely full, Hernan seemed to float in the stage and the rhythm did not give rest. The magical vocal of RUFUS DU SOL in ‘’ Underwater ’’ with Yotto’s remix makes everyone vibrate with emotion, undoubtedly one of the great songs of recent times. Right after, he plays another vocal that made me vibrate in particular, because it was my favorite song of the year; ‘’ U & Me ’’ by Sentre. Once again I was surprised to hear something unexpected through his hands.
Around 01h am another track that was one of the biggest highlights of 2019, ‘’ Falling In ’’ by Orsen, with its striking melody. I look at the clock, it was still early and we had already been moved several times. The best thing was to know that there was still a whole night to go. ‘’ Betera ’’ by Edu Imbernon & Raxon stands out at this time that has songs with a slightly more modern tone, flirting with techno. At 02h am one of the greatest songs of the night in my opinion, ‘’ Runner ’’ from FOALS with a remix of RUFUS DU SOL made everyone sing and explode together. Then, the highlights go to ‘’ Black Swan ’’ by Luca Bacchetti and at 03h am on ‘’ Bloom ’’ by HVOB with remix by Antrim and Claudio Cornejo placed the crowd in a universal immersion.
The song chosen to mark the middle of the night was the track that Hernan played most over the years at Warung – “ I feel loved “ by Depeche Mode with the new remix of Fur Coat took all the mixes of generations of clubbers to delirium , singing and reverencing unanimously. What a moment!
From there, he alternated between more linear moments, such as when he played Hunter Game`s ‘’ Lost ’’, along with more progressive ones like on the fantastic track‘ ‘Where are you ’’, by 1979 artist.
At five o`clock the sun was already shinning. This moment is very aprecciated, since unfortunately now the club needs to close even earlier. To celebrate that moment of the first sun rays on the inside floor, he separated a classic from progressive rock from 1977. ‘’ Magic Fly ’’ from Space with a remix by Amanita and Makebo.
I knew that I had heard this remarkable melody before, but I didn`t remember his name or artist. For anyone who is addicted to music, not remembering an ID you already know is extremely annoying. For sure this music was one of the great moments in all these years listening to the Argentine legend.
Eric Lune on ‘’ Embers ’’ at 5:40 am fit like a glove for having a really unique melody that added a slightly tribal touch. ‘‘ Mahana ’’ by Soma Soul maintained the spiritual tone. These two tracks gave new meaning to the final phase of the set. High rhythm, low bpm by today`s standards and emotional cutouts.
Fulltone`s ‘’C`est Bon’’ at 06:06 am was a light, pure and anesthetizing move before the classic stop for public applause. Hernan returns with full energy for another 20 minutes of traveling breeze. Ole, Ole, Ole, Hernan, Hernan. My last Warung of the year could not have ended otherwise.
His set can be described as having a more modern feel, with a lot of vocals and mainly; extremely danceable throughout! He simply did not want to take a break or enter more obscure and overwhelming moments as in the classic hours 4 and 5 am. I always said that this set time is my favorite, but I definitely didn`t miss it out. In a way, it was a different way to surprise his older fans. One of the secrets of great artists is to reinvent themselves even in the smallest details, where only those who really know him can identify. There was so many on this crowd!
Where is the secret of innovating without losing your best resource? When you believe in an idea and focus all your energies on its realization, regardless of the paths to go, you will arrive at the same point. However, you must not forget any minute that it must be built gradually. In his central idea, Hernan does this in each mix, in each loop, in each imposition of effects, in each decision of the next two, three tracks ahead. But what are we talking about? I would say that his central idea as a DJ basically revolves around “being consistent”. Always creating what I love to call ‘‘continuous flow’’, where the breaks seem smaller than it is, and how the parts that keep the crowd connected and above all, dancing. Explosions are only a part of the game. When it comes to the great legends of building the set, hands up are definitely not the 10th shirt of the game.
After ten years of listening to Hernan play several times, I venture myself to say that rhythmic consistency is his greatest and best feature. After all, it cannot be copied by anyone, neither be attached to any style, it is pure talent. I`ve had years that I mentioned Hernan`s “darkness” side as his best. In others, his tribal side was what gave the league. In others, the always dancing bass lines or maybe the emotional side. Yes, all of that it is about “Cattanism “, as he himself calls the set of characteristics that define him. However, I believe that consistency wins everyone! It is there, where no one expects, that him wins the heart of generations and generations over a life dedicated to music! May you never tire, Maestro, Warung calls you.
