O rosto anguloso, no alto de seus 1,86m de altura, o olhar intenso, a voz inconfundível e a imensa energia que ela entrega nas apresentações são alguns dos adjetivos que tornam Ashibah um ser quase hipnótico quando assume o palco. É realmente difícil tirar os olhos dela, uma beleza exótica de descendência africana que magnetiza a tudo e todos enquanto solta sua voz com traços de Sade. Ela canta sucessos de Fragma, Hot Natured e composições próprias com uma afinação impecável (apesar de pular e dançar o tempo todo), mixando suas produções com sucessos de artistas brasileiros e internacionais, fazendo uma mistura de Sexy, Deep e Tech House que conquista um público crescente. No encerramento da sétima turnê que fez pelo Brasil, a DJ, cantora, compositora e produtora dinamarquesa se derrete pelo país que a recebeu de braços abertos, e já se considera “brasileira de coração”, apaixonada por açaí e canja de galinha.
Mas quem diria que o Egito, um lugar quase místico na imaginação dos ocidentais, é muito parecido com o Brasil? Por isso, não foi nada difícil para Ashibah, metade-dinamarquesa-metade-egípcia, cair de amores por seu novo público assim que botou os pés no Brasil. “Era o meu primeiro show, em Floripa, e eu não fazia ideia do que esperar. Antes da apresentação, fui com a equipe que me acompanhava na casa de alguém e estava acontecendo um churrasco: muitas pessoas diferentes, familiares, amigos, crianças, umas 15 pessoas… estavam assando um peixe, as crianças jogavam futebol no jardim e tudo isso acontecia com vista pro mar. O jeito que as pessoas interagiam, sempre com um sorriso no rosto… eu vi o quanto o Brasil e seu povo são parecidos com os egípcios, todos são tão cordiais, simpáticos, curiosos e amáveis que me senti em casa imediatamente. E no dia seguinte eu fiz minha primeira apresentação no Green Valley, uma noite absolutamente mágica! Depois do show as pessoas me abordaram com muito carinho e intensidade, dizendo que amavam minhas músicas, me abraçando. Foi a primeira vez que tive uma experiência assim com o público. E foi desta forma que começou o meu caso de amor com o Brasil… a minha segunda casa!”.
Já são sete turnês brasileiras, numa relação que começou em 2013 e se fortalece a cada vinda da artista. O país é realmente especial para ela, pois foi no Brasil que ela pediu o amor de sua vida em casamento… e também compôs e produziu algumas tracks que consolidam seu nome no mercado. Ao lado de Vintage Culture, lançou a certeira “Circles”, um dos maiores sucessos de 2014 e que continua incendiando as pistas; “Will Be OK” com Dashdot e Rocksted; a recente “Make It Better”, outra colaboração com Dashdot; “Without You”, com Sharam Jey; a cheia de groove “Get It On”, ao lado de Jean Bacarreza, “Let You Go”, com Chemical Surf, a recém lançada “Anything”, co-produção com Schwanka, e várias outras. “Quando eu recebo uma produção, gosto de ficar imersa no som pra sentir o que vou compor pra música. Aí trabalho nas melodias e letras a quatro mãos: muitas das músicas eu crio junto de minha ‘parceira no crime’, Nikoline. Nos completamos muito bem no estúdio. E são, geralmente, nas seções à capela no estúdio, quando escrevo e canto sobre o que estou sentindo, que as músicas surgem. Acho que você pode chamar isso de ‘autoterapia’ e o Brasil tem me inspirado como nunca!”, explica, sorrindo. Quando perguntada sobre qual artista brasileiro ela adoraria dividir as produções e pick-ups, Ashibah responde na lata: “Gui Boratto. Ele é um gênio!”.
Uma turnê pra ficar na memória
Ela chegou ao país em outubro de 2017 e foi embora no final do mês de março. Foram seis meses de residência brasileira, mais precisamente em Balneário Camboriú/SC. E este período se transformou em 30 apresentações e muitas tracks novas. Com vários lançamentos rolando, incluindo parcerias com Sharam Jey, Dashdot, Nora en Pure, Gabriel Boni, Sonny Fodera, Mumbaata e outros artistas, Ashibah finaliza seu primeiro álbum ainda este ano. “Eu faço muitas colaborações com outros DJs, no mundo inteiro, mas este será o meu álbum, a minha expressão, quem eu sou na totalidade. Você sabe, eu adoro me divertir nos clubs e sou bem ‘party monster’, mas também sou muito emocional. Eu tenho várias facetas e você pode esperar por todas elas neste álbum, músicas super agitadas pro club, mas também um som bem tranquilo, para relaxar smoking a joint”, brinca.
Quem é essa garota?
A artista que dá vida à Ashibah é Sarah El Habashy. Ela nasceu em 1984, numa cidade de 47 mil habitantes no sul da Dinamarca, chamada Naestved. O pai é egípcio, a mãe é dinamarquesa, e as memórias de infância são recheadas de música. Quando tinha 2 anos de idade, seu pais se mudaram para a capital do Egito, Cairo, cidade onde viveu com os irmãos até a adolescência. A bela voz do pai foi a herança genética que despertou Sarah para a música, ainda muito nova, influenciada pelo pop dinamarquês dos anos 80, a soul music americana e artistas tradicionais egípcios. Sarah cantou no coral da escola e aos 7 anos de idade escreveu sua primeira música, uma canção de amor. Aprendeu a tocar udo, um instrumento egípcio parecido com o violão, e começou a brincar de produção musical, mesmo sem nunca ter pisado numa escola de música. “Eu aprendi o que sei sozinha e com as pessoas que conheci ao longo da minha jornada. Quando eu precisava aprender algo, eu me virava e dava um jeito”, conta, mostrando que a personalidade forte veio do berço.
We love House Music (e basquete)
Nos anos 90, início de sua adolescência, Sarah se apaixonou pela House Music made in Chicago, cheia de vocais poderosos e mensagens fortes. “Sonique foi quem me despertou para os vocais originais na música eletrônica. Foi ela que começou este movimento. Lembro de um show dela em Cairo, eu conhecia os organizadores da festa e fiquei bem atrás dela enquanto ela tocava. Eu só olhava e pensava ‘ela é foda! É isso que eu quero fazer da minha vida!’”. E não demorou a acontecer.
No ensino médio, ela dividiu seu tempo entre e as apresentações como DJ em festinhas da turma, ao lado de seu melhor amigo, e os treinos e competições de basquete, esporte que pratica desde a infância. Mas quis o destino que ela fizesse a escolha mais importante de sua vida, que definiria seu futuro, ainda adolescente. “Comecei a jogar basquete na Seleção do Egito quando tinha 16 anos de idade e ganhei uma bolsa para jogar e estudar nos Estados Unidos. E foi neste momento que eu decidi largar o basquete para me dedicar ao meu verdadeiro amor, a música”.
Então… nasceu Ashibah!
O começo da carreira artística não foi tão fácil. Era a primeira década dos anos 2000 e num mercado dominado pelos homens, uma DJ enfrentava ainda mais dificuldades para conquistar espaço. Foi, então, que os vocais ao vivo começaram a fazer parte das apresentações de Sarah e o público de Copenhagen ficou curioso com a novidade. Boom! Assim nasceu Ashibah. “As pessoas se interessaram porque era algo diferente na noite, eu cantava e tocava ao mesmo tempo e a maioria se surpreendia quando via isso”, lembra. E veio o primeiro grande reconhecimento: um contrato de dois anos com as gigantes Ministry of Sound e HedKandi, entre 2013 e 2014. “Foi tudo tão rápido, uma reunião em Londres e na semana seguinte eu já estava na estrada. Viajei e toquei pelo mundo todo com eles. Tive muitos momentos especiais, como a noite em que me apresentei no 70˚ andar de um dos arranha-céus mais altos do mundo, com vista pra cidade de Jacarta… e quando toquei em Ibiza, claro”.
Outro divisor de águas foi a relação que Ashibah construiu com o belga Kolombo, que praticamente lançou sua carreira como vocalista em collabs. Ela o conheceu numa festa na Dinamarca, disse que adorava suas tracks e que faria uma colaboração com vocais na hora em que ele quisesse. Dois dias depois, Kolombo enviou uma track, ela compôs uns versos e mandou de volta. “Uma hora depois ele ligou e disse ‘pqp, eu amei! Vamos lançar!’”. Era o remix de “Wade in The Water”, uma das mais tocadas em 2013, especialmente no verão de Ibiza (e com suporte de Laurent Garnier).
Ela vai ali e já volta
Ashibah retorna ao Brasil para uma turnê de inverno, em julho. “Eu sinto uma conexão especial com meus fãs brasileiros. Para mim, é como encontrar pessoas da minha família em cada show que faço. Afinal, são meus ashibunnys! E mal posso esperar para vê-los novamente, em alguns dos meus clubs brasileiros favoritos, neste inverno”, conta, referindo-se ao nome carinhoso que batizou os fãs brasileiros. E os ashibunnys podem se preparar, pois uma grande turnê de verão está nos planos do final de ano. “A turnê do próximo verão será a cereja do bolo. Tenho muitas tracks novas e quero levar o público numa jornada diferente e mais profunda. Meu álbum estará nas ruas e além das apresentações nos clubs, teremos alguns shows bem especiais. Será incrível!”, finaliza.

All the tropicality of the danish artist, who lives a longtime romance with Brazil

The angular face, at the top of her 6ft tall figure, the way that she looks at her crowd, the unmistakable voice and the powerful energy that she puts on her shows are some of the particularities that makes Ashibah an hypnotic artist at the stage. It’s really hard to take the eyes off her, an exotic beauty of African descent that magnetizes everything and everyone with her silky voice with a touch of Sade. She sings hits from Fragma, Hot Natured and her own compositions with impeccable tuning (despite jumping and dancing all the time), mixing her productions with hits from brazilian and international artists, making a mix of Sexy, Deep and Tech House that conquers a growing public. At the end of her seventh brazilian tour, the danish DJ, singer, songwriter and producer melts her heart for the country that embraced her, already considering herself a brazilian at heart, in love with açaíand “canja” (brazilian chicken soup).
But who would say that Egypt, a mystical place in the imagination of the westerners, is very similar to Brazil? Soit wasn’t difficult at all for Ashibah, a part-danish-part-egyptian artist, to fall in love with her new audience, as soon as she put her feet on the country for the first time. “I was in Brazil for my first show in Floripa, and I had no idea what to expect. Before the performance, I went with the team to someone`s house and a barbecue was happening: many different people, family, friends, children, about 15 people … they were roasting a fish, children playing soccer in the garden and everything was happening right in front of the beach. The way people interacted, always with a smile on their faces… I saw how Brazil and its people are similar to the Egyptians,everyone is so cordial, friendly, curious and kind. I felt at home immediately. And the next day I did my first performance in Green Valley, an absolutely magical night! After the show people approached me with a lot of affection and intensity, saying that they loved my songs, hugging me. It was the first time I had such an intense experience with the public. And that’s how my love affair with Brazil began … my second home!“.
There are already seven brazilian tours, in a relationship that began in 2013 and is strengthened every time she comes back. This country is special for her, because it was in Brazil that she got engaged… and also composed and produced some of the tracks that gave her a strong name in this music industry. Alongside Vintage Culture, she launched “Circles”, one of the greatest hits of 2014 that continues to set the dance floor on fire; “Will Be OK” with Dashdot and Rocksted; “Make It Better”, an upcoming collaboration with Dashdot; “Without You” with SharamJey; “Get It On,” alongside Jean Bacarreza, “Let You Go,” with Chemical Surf, the recently released “Anything”, a co-production with Schwanka, and many others. “If I receive a production, I usually let it get under my skin first to feel what I am gonna write about. Then we work the melodies and lyrics hand in hand. Most songs I work on with my partner in crime, Nikoline. We complete each other well in the studio. Sometimes it’s acapella jamming in the studio where I write and sing about what I am feeling and out comes a song. Self-therapy, you can call it. And Brazil has inspired me like never before!”, she explains, smiling. When asked about what brazilian artist she would love to share the productions and pick-ups, Ashibah responds with any doubt: “Gui Boratto. He is a genius!“.
A tour for the records
The 6 months of brazilian summer turned into 30 presentations and a lot of new tracks. With several releases rolling out, including partnerships with Sharam Jey, Dashdot, Nora en Pure, Gabriel Boni, Sonny Fodera, Mumbaata and other artists, Ashibah finishes her first album later this year. “I do a lot of collaborations with other DJs all over the world, but this will be my album, my expression, who I am in totality. You know, I love having fun in clubs and I`m a pretty `party monster`, but I`m also very emotional. I have several sides of me and you can wait for all of them in this album, a mix of songs super energetic for the clubs, but also a very chill sound, House Music to relax smoking a joint “.
Who’s that girl?
The artist who gives life to Ashibah is Sarah El Habashy. She was born in 1984 in a town of 47,000 people in the south of Denmark, called Naestved. Her father is Egyptian, her mother is Danish, and her childhood memories are filled with music. When she was 2 years old, her parents moved to the capital of Egypt, Cairo, the city where she lived with her brother and sister until her teen years. Her father`s beautiful voice was the genetic inheritance that pushed Sarah into music, on a very young age, influenced by 80`s Danish pop, American soul music and traditional Egyptian artists. Sarah sang in the school choir and at the age of 7 wrote her first song. She learned how to play the udo, an Egyptian guitar-like instrument, and began playing music, even without ever having stepped into a music school. “I learned what I know on my own and with the people I`ve met along the way. When I needed to learn something, I would turn around and find a way”, she says, showing that her strong personality came from the cradle.
We love House Music (and basketball)
In the early `90s, at her teens, Sarah fell in love with House Music made in Chicago, full of powerful vocals and strong messages. “Sonique was the one who woke me up for the original vocals in electronic music. She started this movement. I remember her show in Cairo, I knew the organizers of the party and I stood right behind her while she played. I just looked and thought `she`s fucking amazing! That`s what I want to do with my life!”
In high school, she played basketball and showed her djingskills at parties on the weekends, with her best friend. Butthe gods of destiny wanted her to make the most important choice of her life, which would define her future, when she was just 16. “I started playing basketball in the Egyptian national team and I won a scholarship to play in the United States. On that moment I decided to drop basketball to dedicate myself to my true love: music “.
So… Ashibah has born!
The beginning of her artistic career was not so easy. It was the early 2000s and in a industry dominated by men, a female DJ faces even more difficulties to conquer her own space. But then, the live vocals began to be part of Sarah`s performances and the Copenhagen night scene started to be curious about her. Boom! Ashibah was born. “People were interested because it was something different, I sang and played at the same time and most people were surprised by that”, she recalls. Then Ashibah got a big international recognition: a two-year contract with Ministry of Sound and HedKandi, between 2013 and 2014. “It was all so fast, a meeting in London and in the following week I was already on the road. I traveled and performed around the world with them. I had so many special moments, like the night I played on the 70th floor of one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world, overlooking the city of Jakarta… and Ibiza, of course. “
Ashibah built a great relationship with the belgian artist Kolombo, who practically launched her career as lead singer in collabs. She met him at a party in Denmark, said him that she loved his tracks and would do a collaboration with vocals anytime. Two days later, Kolombo sent a track, she composed a few verses and sent it back. “An hour later he called and said `fuck yeah, I loved it! Let`s sign it!”. It was the remix of “Wade in The Water”, one of the most played tracks in 2013, especially in Ibiza (with the support from Laurent Garnier).
Don’t worry, she will be back
Ashibah returns to Brazil for a winter tour in July. “I feel a special connection with my brazilian fans. For me, it`s like meeting my family at every show I do. After all, they are my ashibunnys! And I can’t wait to see them again, in some of my favorite brazilian clubs in july“, she says, referring to the cute nickname that she baptized her brazilian fans. And the ashibunnys have to prepare themselves, because a big summer tour is coming. “Next summer`s tour will be the icing on the cake. I have so many new tracks and I want to take the audience on a different and deeper journey. My album will be in the streets and besides the performances in the clubs, we will have some very special shows. It will be incredible!”.
